SDI Heartland Division

Products

Our Products
The Heartland Division has the annual capability to produce one million tons of flat rolled steel products. Heartland is comprised of a continuous pickle line, cold mill, galvanizing line, a GALVALUME® line and a Painted Steel Sheet line. The geographic proximity of the Heartland Division to Steel Dynamics’ other flat roll operations and certain fabrication locations provides opportunities related to logistics and production efficiencies throughout the supply chain and customer network.
Markets
Flat rolled steel products represent the largest portion of the domestic steel market. Our steel sheet products are used in the manufacturing of automobiles, appliances, construction products, consumer electronics, agricultural products such as culverts and grain bins, office furniture and pipe and tubing for the oil and natural gas wells. The following chart shows the U.S. shipments of these products, as reported by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Cold Rolled Sheet

Our cold rolled steel sheet has been cold-reduced to the specified thickness and subsequently annealed and temper-rolled to achieve the desired characteristics. Our two-stand reversing cold mill is the beating heart of the Heartland Division. It’s a unique and highly innovative piece of equipment that allows us to cold reduce steel down to 0.0095. Our mill provides a precise and efficient means to reduce the thickness of hot band coil, capable of handling coils up to 72 inches wide. Customers may specify full-hard, half-hard or quarter-hard cold rolled steel with off-gauge heads and tails cropped at the temper mill. Our cold rolled steel sheet is used in a broad range of applications by manufacturers in the automotive, appliance, office furniture, lighting and tubing industries.

Cold Rolled Base Galvanized Sheet

Produced at our Terre Haute, Indiana facility, our cold rolled galvanized steel is also coated with a thin layer of zinc to improve its corrosion resistance. Cold rolled galvanized sheet steel is well suited to surface-critical applications. In addition to our standard spangle-free finish, a variety of surface treatments is available to further inhibit oxidation or to improve formability. Common applications for our cold rolled galvanized products are found in the agricultural, appliance, automotive, construction, office furniture, and pipe and tube industries.
